Sweden managed to dampen Italy's strength at the San Siro with a 0-0 draw in the World Cup qualifying play-offs.
For the first time since 1958, Italy failed to advance to the World Cup finals after losing narrowly with a 0-1 aggregate from Sweden.
Round I.
Both teams have been playing very tight since the first whistle blown. Italy as the host was playing very attack from the beginning of the game but unfortunately the Swedish defense is still very disciplined so that the first Azzuri attack only ends with a goal kick.
In the 8th minute Italy had a chance for a penalty kick when Parolo was dropped by the Swedish but unfortunately the referee thought it was just a diving action, the first yellow card for Azzuri when Chiellini protested the referee.
Playing equally hard to make both teams play less cautiously, if only the referee saw the hands-ball that occurred in Italy penalty box, it is not possible Sweden managed to lead the score in just 12 minutes.
The Swedes must lose their hero in the first leg, Johansson, due to injury when clashing with an Italian player in the 19th minute which makes him to be stretched off the pitch and replaced by Svensson.
Brave to win the game and qualify for Russia, Italy do everything on the green field, including playing hard and not really upholding fair play. In 22 minutes, Italy has collected 2 yellow cards.
Italy had a potential attack on goal when Immobile managed to outwit the goalkeeper with his flat pass to the right of goal, but unfortunately Gabbiadini was still far behind and the ball fell to Parolo's leg who kicked the ball too fast and drifted over the crossbar.
On the 30th minute, Sweden have registered 2 times a penalty after the ball over the hands of the Italians, unfortunately the referee again did not see the offense and only gave a yellow card for Forsberg who protested against the referee.
Not even 35 minutes of the game, the referee has issued a total of 4 yellow cards, for Chiellini, Barzhagli, Johansson, and Forsberg
The 40th minute of Italy came back almost scoring when Immobile escaped the Swedish offside trap and his shot headed right into Sweden's goalkeeper's unattended goal, but unfortunately the ball pace was diverted by the Swedish defender to the left side of the net.
The last five minutes with 3 minutes of injury time in the first half, Italy a lot of attacks to the Swedish defense side but the wall built by almost all Swedish players managed to block the onslaught of Azzuri attacks. 0-0 score lasted until halftime break.
Round II
The second half just started one minute, controversy again happened when Darmian fell as she clashed with the Swedish defender in the penalty box. However, it is not considered by the referee as an offense.
During the 60th minute of the game, Sweden looked more defensive considering they had a 1-0 lead in the first leg, and Sweden also use more quick counterattacks to the Italian back line.
Contrary to the host team who more often build attacks from their midfield.
The entry of El Shaarawy seems to be very influential on Azzuri attacks. Up until midway through the second half, Italy had four shots on target while Sweden were only 1 shot.
Until the 85th minute the onslaught of Gli Azzuri still can be intercepted by the very disciplined Swedish players guard their penalty box from the Italian attack balls.
El Shaarawy is undoubtedly a super-sub even though until the 88th minute of Italy has not managed to break the Swedish goalkeeper, the Egyptian player managed to make a significant difference in the Italian attack line.
Until the fifth minute of injury time in the second half ended, Italy got a lot of opportunities and corner kicks. But the opportunity is not able to be treated with the maximum by foster children Giampiero Ventura.
Long whistle marks the end of the game was blown. And for the first time after 60 years, Italy failed to appear on the mat World Cup.
